For women who value beautiful nails – and that’s just about all of us, even the thought of a chipped or broken nail can provoke a strong reaction. Let’s face it: most of us work fairly hard to keep our nails in tip-top shape, and the last thing we need is to watch one nail get broken or otherwise marred by chance or poor decision-making. While we can’t do much about those accidents that happen from time to time, we can do something about that poor decision-making. For example, do you ever use your nails to open cans or scrape away dirt and gunk?
Be honest… you know you do.
Well, the problem is that your nails are not designed to be tools. They just aren’t! Oh sure, a nice, healthy, strong set of nails can seemingly accomplish anything. We’ve all seen women who regularly used their nails to pick away at their nail polish, scrape away glue or other debris, peel labels, cut open boxes, or open cans. Most of us have probably done it ourselves at different points in our lives. And few of us ever give it a second thought. Until we chip, crack, or break a nail, that is.
Stop using your nails as tools! No matter how strong your nails might be, they will never match the strength and durability of a can opener, screwdriver, box-cutter, or similar tools. When you use them in place of those types of man-made tools, it’s only a matter of time until you experience a break or some other type of damage. And when that happens, it will be too late to lament the fact that you didn’t use a real tool to handle that task.
Of course, you shouldn’t stop there. There are other ways that you probably use your hands that expose your nails to danger too. Do you wash dishes? Work outside in the garden? Clean your house with chemicals? All of those seemingly harmless tasks can put your nails at risk! The good news, though, is that you can avoid that risk by doing just one little thing: wear gloves.
When you do dishes or handle chemicals, be sure to put on a pair of latex gloves or other protective wear. When you work outside, wear a thin pair of gloves to protect your hands and nails. Before you do anything that could potentially harm your nails, ask yourself one simple question: is there a way to protect my nails and still accomplish my objective?
